Shopper’s Story: Mom on a Mission

Recently, a frantic young mom came in to our Free Community Store. She had taken her son’s clothes down to the community laundry space in their apartment building. She went upstairs to wake her son for school and when she returned to the dryer everything had been stolen. Her son was left with the pajamas he was wearing and a pair of underwear on the floor that had missed the laundry basket. Worst case scenario for a kid in middle school!

As she searched for clothing that would work, she tearfully shared how hard her morning had been and how thankful she was that we were here for her family.

With your help, The Giving Closet lessened the burden for this mama as she rushed home to save the day! 🧡

Back to School BASH 2023

One of the highlights of our year is the annual Back to School BASH, and this year’s event did not disappoint! With help from our generous partners, we were able to put on an incredible event that provided help, hope, and FUN for our guests! We were able to give out 385 backpacks at the event!

The Giving Closet has been in the news recently! We’re so thankful to The Columbian and KGW for featuring our recent financial hardships with their audience.

We are so passionate about keeping the doors of our Free Community Store open to allow our guests to shop with dignity for the things they need. We hope you’ll take a moment to watch and read!

Shopper’s Story

Every week, we open the doors of our Free Community Store for shoppers to access clothing and household items they need but cannot afford. We would love to tell you about a recent experience that one of our shoppers had at The Giving Closet. We’ll call him Mike to protect his privacy.

Mike and his family experienced a financial emergency that resulted in them living in their car. Living in a car for one person can prove challenging, let alone having an entire family in those cramped quarters. Mike applied and interviewed for a great new job, but he had to have steel toe boots. This new job would provide for his family, but he didn’t have the funds to buy the new boots it required.

He visited The Giving Closet with his family and shared his need for boots with a volunteer. The volunteer’s eyes lit up! A pair of boots had recently been donated. She ran to get them and eagerly waited while Mike tried them on. The boots were a perfect fit! He was so amazed the Closet would even have steel toe boots, let alone in his size! The volunteer smiled, as she had seen it many times before. Donations often come in that just so happen to meet a specific shopper’s need. Mike’s story is an amazing example of how The Giving Closet supplies more than just clothing! This family received a dose of hope through steel toe work boots in size 14!

Andrea (An-dray-ah)

andreaA little baby girl plans to arrive in two weeks. She has no idea, but her mom had a divine appointment here at The Giving Closet today…

Yesterday, a man called on the phone with some baby items to donate. It became clear when he said he was donating an entire nursery that there was a story behind his request. Usually, we do not accept some of the things he was bringing, but we felt the need to be available to him. He brought his things in and all of them were new. Brand new boxes, tags, beautiful items bought in the joy of a baby girl on her way to join the family. This couple decided they were ready to let go and bless someone in need with their baby girl’s things. She died six years ago and never got the chance to use them.

We were able to share these beautiful new things with a mom who is alone, homeless and living in a friend’s spare room at the moment after fleeing an unhealthy relationship. She had nothing but a few clothes for her baby. We were able to share with her a bit of the story we knew and the timing of this tender gift her new daughter, Andrea, was about to receive. She asked for the man’s address so she could send them a thank you note.

We never got this man’s name.

It became very clear that God had a plan all along. Today, He transformed one family’s loss, despair, and sadness into LIFE, HOPE and PROVISION for baby Andrea.

Cutting class is a good thing on Common Day of Service at Warner Pacific College. These students arrived on September 16th with open hearts and willing hands to do whatever we needed them to do! Thank you for living out your motto, “Where faith and scholarship lead to service”. It looks amazing around here!

MAKE A WISH…

Make a Wish
Close your eyes and draw in a huge breath…and imagine that your only wish is that someone knows it’s your birthday and celebrates YOU. These gifts went to a group of youth whose very WISH may have been just that. To be known, celebrated, and loved. We delivered these birthday gifts in hopes of bringing BIRTHDAY JOY to the hearts of these young people that have no one to celebrate with them.

Free ClothingWe have a new Tuesday crowd! We opened our doors to seniors and adults with disabilities who are facing life on a seriously restricted income.

One of our guests told us that she lives on $28 a month after paying for assisted living. Her smile was luminous as she let us know that she hasn’t been able to shop for clothing in years. Your donations are making it possible for this woman and many like her to feel beautiful and amazing again!

Children Get the Closet

Donate-Your-Stuff

Have observed that children get the concept of giving at a very young age, even beginning at age 5. While visiting the Closet with my grandson (age 5) he asked about the people and kids that come to the Closet why they don’t have anything or need to shop at the Closet?

In an attempt to answer my grandson’s question I asked him what he would do if he didn’t have any toys? He said he would be sad. I then asked him what other children would feel if they didn’t have any toys, he said they would be sad too.  People (parents) and their kids who don’t have a lot or may not have any toys come to the Closet and get toys along with other clothing items.

I asked my grandson if he thought he had a lot of toys… “Yes”. And would it be ok to give some of them to the Closet to go to kids that didn’t have any and he again said yes adding that he was excited he could help out. So that evening we went through his toy box and pulled out toys that he wanted to give away realizing that he would not see them again and it was ok and we took them to the Closet the next day. And he was still ok.
